Review: Destroyed (By a Dangerous Man #12) by Cleo Peitsche

Title: Destroyed
Author: Cleo Peitsche
Publisher/Year:  Pouch Production 5/26/16
Length:   113 Pages
Series:  By a Dangerous Man #12

The family business is in trouble, and bounty hunter Audrey Stroop is dying to get back to work. Her boyfriend, ex-assassin Corbin Lagos, is equally determined to keep her safe.

To do that, he’ll stay close, even if it means trying to keep his dominant nature in check.

When they team up to solve what should be an open-and-shut private investigation case, Audrey learns that being the boss isn’t easy. In fact, it’s almost impossible.

Did she really think a dominant, dangerous man like Corbin could ever truly submit?

My Thoughts

I don’t know how much father our author can take this series, but she’s definitely trying.  What we have here is the moment in the story where we’re on vacation with Corbin and Audrey since Corbin feels that she needs a break from the family business, and it’s harder than any one expected for her to take a month off.  being able to turn off her work mindset for even a little while is proving to be tough.

It’s while they are on their vacation that they cross paths with someone from back home (because that always happens right?) and that leads to some PI work for the firm.  What was supposed to be a cut and dry case of finding a bar mascot turns into something that’s more devious and complicated than expected.

The mascot is returned, but cut into pieces and all bloody and there are folks in the bar who are less than forthcoming with information to link things back.  Thank goodness Audrey and Corbin are so attuned to each other that they don’t have too long to figure out how to solve the case.

While that’s going on too though, Corbin is offering up his submission to Audrey, allowing her the opportunity to tell him what to do since part of her current level of frustration is that he’s always in control – and i think that it’s interesting to see that it’s so much harder than expected to let that happen.

My question now though is that i really don’t know how this series will continue since it seems to be quieting down just a little bit.  I feel like we see that Corbin and Audrey are trying to find their rhythm, and that Rob seems happy and that their father is coming to the realization that maybe he needs to listen to his kids in order to keep his business afloat.  So i guess we’ll just have to see if and when the story continues.  knowing full well that when it does, Corbin will make sure that we’re all sorts of hot and bothered.  Enjoy!

Review: Bind (The Donovan Dynasty #1) by Sierra Cartwright

Title: Bind
Author: Sierra Cartwright
Publisher/Year:  Totally Entwined Group 69/15
Length:   265 Pages
Series:  The Donovan Dynasty #1

Book one in The Donovan Dynasty series

Only one man can help her. Is she willing to pay his price?

Faced with the potentially overwhelming loss of her family’s fortune, Lara Bertrand turns to the one man who can help her, the gorgeous and powerful Connor Donovan.

She knows he’s dangerous to her on every level. Only desperation would drive her to make such a risky proposition. After all, she knows all about his ruthless nature and relentless determination to succeed.

When the classy, elegant Lara walks into his office with an outrageous proposal, Connor is stunned and more than a little intrigued. Ever since he first met her, he’s been attracted to the cool beauty, but she’s more than kept her distance.

Connor is absolutely willing to help her out. For a price. He not only wants her hand in marriage, but also her total submissive surrender…

My Thoughts

I’m a huge fan of Ms. Cartwrights, so when i came across this series, i had to see what it was about.  I have to say that it lived up to everything else that we’ve been gifted with.

We start off with characters that are not only entwined because of business, but also because of a family bond.  Lara our leading lady and Erin are really close friends, and she’s kind of the tie that initially binds – getting the two together.

Connor is a businessman who is closed off to emotions and relationships, partially because of what his parents relationship was before his father’s death and partially because he’s so focused on work and building is company.

Of course that means that we’ll have two leads that are so focused on doing the right things for their businesses that they sacrifice their own happiness.  It’s only when Lara finds herself in a jam where she needs to bring Connor into the mix in a way that’s going to complicate things both personally and professionally that things begin to get hot.

There’s such chemistry between these two, that you can’t help but to be completely engaged in all that they do.  They scene well, the fact that Connor is a D and Lara really knows nothing about being an ‘s’ – aside from the fact that she likes it a bit kinky, well i think that we’re destined for a great education here.

If i could find fault with one thing is that connor was so willing and quick to admit his preferences in the bed room and i don’t know that it’s realistic that it would have happened that fast.  In all of the other series in the genre that i’ve read, there’s been a bit of hesitancy given that its not quite mainstream, but i guess it works here since they obviously trusted each other quite a bit.

As the story progresses, we see the forming of a true relationship, even if it’s a sham from the onset, and the depth that things go once you open yourself up to the possibility.  Lara fights Connor on everything, but even so, you can see a true relationship forming and it’ll be a question of who breaks first and what it will mean.

We’re given the expected level of anxiety and stress when they realize that maybe there’s more than they bargained for, and then it’s a question of who will make the first move to bring things back full circle.  Will Lara be able to help save her family’s business, and what cost will that come to her father given that he’s the one causing all of this.  Then there’s the question of whether Connor and Lara really are compatible and what that will mean since it’s not something that they are either open to.

On that note, i’ll track down #2 and see who gets featured next.  Happy Memorial Day!

Review: Make Me Forever (Make Me #8) by Beth Kery

Title: Make Me Forever
Author: Beth Kery
Publisher/Year:  Penguin Publishing 5/22/16
Length:   70 pages
Series:  Make Me #8

As the New York Times bestselling author of Because You Are Mine and The Affair delivers the final installment of her breathtaking new serial novel, Jacob and Harper are forced to examine the strength of their love—and the frailty of their desire…

Unable to hide from Harper any longer, Jacob reveals his painful past, finally acknowledging his long-hidden connection to her. Afraid the truth will drive her away forever, he’s surprised when Harper exposes startling facts about her own past.

Harper is is angry at Jacob for robbing her of someone she’d loved and burying a part of himself she’d forever cherish. Still, when he faces a devastating loss, Harper races to his side. Strengthened by Harper’s love, Jacob finally fully bares his soul and reveals everything he has kept hidden. But if they are to have a future together, he will need to release all of his shame—and embrace a happiness they both desperately deserve..

My Thoughts

And the truth FINALLY comes out.  we learn so much in these last 70 pages  – seeing what Harper went through when she was saved, and what her parents did in the hopes of making her life better which actually made it all worse.  Then we see what Jacob went through during those years as well and of course it makes you feel so sorry for him.

The other thing here is that we see that their trust still isn’t that firm.  I mean, i thought that they had gotten past the hurdle, but when Jacob is led to believe that Harper is looking into his past, when it’s really someone else pretending to be her, well you just can’t wait to see the explosion go off there.  I think that it’s no surprise that Harper wants distance and that she needs to regain some of the control over her life that she’s lost.

And of course, there’s Regina.  She’s a bit of a wild card – you never really knew what the back story was there, and you don’t know what her mindset will be at any given moment.  Well, she comes back, she causes trouble, and all that results in a death.  who’s  – well you’ll have to read to find out.

In any event, i think if nothing else, we learn so much more about what made Jacob into the man he became, and why he did that – and you see why he surrounds himself with the type of women that he does.  I feel like all this is why he’s so different with Harper, but you’re forced to wonder if it’s sustainable, and if it’s something that they both want.  that they can both live with.  Are they too damaged to make it work or is love enough?  and do they love each other now even knowing what their pasts were, and weren’t?

If all that weren’t enough, Ms.Kery gives us exactly what we need in the sense of heated scenes between these two.  you know what you’re going to get with them, one who needs to be in complete control, and one who needs to be controlled.  it’s hot.  and steamy and makes me want to see oh so much more!

Review: Climax (Her British Stepbrother #3) by Lauren Smith

Title: Climax
Author: Lauren Smith
Publisher/Year:  Grand Central Publishing 5/3/16
Length:   132 pages
Series:  Her British Stepbrother #3

A love so forbidden. A passion so undeniable . . .

It’s time for Kat to face the truth. She can’t resist sexy playboy Tristan–he’s too deliciously seductive, and much too good at making her melt, body and soul. With photographic proof plastered all over London, the whole world now knows she’s fallen for this British bad boy.

There’s just one problem. Their parents got married and now Tristan is her stepbrother. They shouldn’t be together, but Tristan always gets what he wants, and he wants her more than anything. Behind closed doors, this only makes every moment they spend together hotter, every kiss deeper, as the passion between them blazes higher . . .

My Thoughts

This story continues to take us on a journey of a romance that’s more romeo and juliet than you’d ever imagine.  The news has picked up the story of the image of the 2 of them together that they did with a photographer for a contest, and while they figure they can find a way to explain things, it means that their cover is blown.  While that’s not really a huge issue in most cases, we see that the reaction of one parent over another, and over another makes things even more interesting.

Where we go on this third book, we see a romance that’s coming out into the open, a a wedding take place faster than anyone expected and a lot of threats and forceful words being utttered to get people to do what is expected of them.

We know that Kat is a selfless person, and we see that time and time again here – she has no choice again but to let Tristan go, and that’s something that breaks her soul.  not just her heart but her soul.  Tristan feels the same way and it’s nice to see that carter and Celia even will do what’s needed to try to help.

Tristan’s father Edward plays a huge role in things, Clayton – Kat’s dad plays a role that i never saw coming and surprisingly, Lizzy, Tristan’s mother plays a role that i was hoping for.

And it wouldn’t be a ‘romance’ if there wasn’t a car crash and someone’s teetering on the brink of death.  What will life be when and if that person makes it and who’s going to make the concessions?

If nothing else, in this story, we get angst sure – but we get heat and passion.  While we know that Kat was a virgin, we see that Tristan knows how to teach someone quickly and completely and when they come together, man, it’s HOT.  steamy steamy hot.

I feel like the epilogue is a nice tease, and i can’t wait to see if we get another book out of this since i feel like while we got some closure, we didn’t get it all.  So…fingers crossed – have a great night all!

Review: Seduction (Her British Stepbrother #2) by Lauren Smith

Title: Seduction
Author: Lauren Smith
Publisher/Year:  Grand Central Publishing 3.8/16
Length:   134 pages
Series:  Her British Stepbrother #2

Tristan is a man who knows what he wants. And he wants Kat in his bed. All he has to do is convince her they belong together . . .

Kat knows the connection she and Tristan share is special. Her British bad boy is too much of everything: too hot, too arrogant, too irresistible to stay away from. He’s her addiction and one night with him isn’t enough.

That’s what hurts the most. They can’t date, can’t be a normal couple, not when their parents are getting married. Because now that she knows he’s going to be her stepbrother, no one can ever find out what they’ve done . . .

My Thoughts

The Saga continues – and of course we know that it’s going to get oh so much more complicated.  Kat was trying to stay away from Tristan to begin with given that he had a reputation and she was such an innocent, and well, now that there’s the added issue of their parents getting married, she’s running for the hills.

There is so much chemistry though between them that it’s a struggle to stay away from each other and they need to find the balance on how to do that.  We see that as the main bits of this story – knowing that they want each other, but they can’t let their parents know since it’s taboo.

In addition to all that, we see that they have to also hide from the papps, and when they almost get discovered, it makes things more complicated – that’s a surprise that they don’t necessarily care for and one that comes up again at the very end of this 2nd book.  it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Tristan of course has another obstacle in the form of his father who’s called him back home early and who’s trying to exert his power and force on Tristan in a way that’s not ideal.  Being of British Peerage, there’s the expectation that as an Earl, he’s going to marry someone of equal stature, and in this case, his father has plans for Tristan to marry someone that while he’s friends with, he doesn’t want to be with (especially since Kat’s in the picture).  so that’s another branch of the story that i can’t wait to see play out.

So on that note, i’m looking forward to seeing what book 3 brings us and who gets hurt and how.  Enjoy!

Review: Forbidden (Her British Stepbrother #1) by Lauren Smith

Title: Forbidden
Author: Lauren Smith
Publisher/Year:  Grand Central Publishing 1/12/16
Length:   168 pages
Series:  Her British Stepbrother #1

He’s her first. He’s her everything. He’s her . . . stepbrother.

Kat has always been a good girl. She studies hard and never stays out too late. But when sitting in a pub on her birthday, she realizes she’s a nineteen-year-old virgin who’s never really lived. And she wants tonight to be the night that changes.

Then she sees him walk in. He’s tall, dark, handsome, and straight out of her deepest fantasies. His voice makes her knees feel weak, and when he smiles, she imagines him doing wicked things to her in bed. From the look in his eyes, she knows he’s imagining it too. So when he asks if he can walk her home, she hears herself whisper yes . . .

My Thoughts

ahhh yes, yet another naive innocent virgin to be seduced by the naughty guy with lots of experience right?  Well, while the premise isn’t anything new persay – i think that what we have here will get to be interesting if you take the series name into account.

We meet Kat when she’s out on the town in Cambridge with one of her close friends – and this is something new given that she always moves so much because of her father’s work, and she’s finally at a place in life where she can put roots down since she’s now in school in Cambridge.  If that weren’t enough to change her life from the mundane bits that it’s always been, on this same night she sees a man enter the pub who owns the room the moment he steps in, and others in the pub whisper about him and his conquests which of course makes things more interesting.

that of course is the introduction that we have of Tristan – who’s soon to be the Earl of something or other, and of course, in true fashion, he’s a man that women gravitate towards, and he doesn’t matter much what he leaves behind him as long as he’s enjoyed himself for the time being.

All that changes when these 2 meet – they find that there’s a chemistry between them that’s quite powerful, and i think that it’s only a matter of time to see how her innocence makes Tristan want to change,  and then to see what lengths he goes to in order to prove it.

Given that there’s not a ton of ‘substance’ to this first book, we don’t get a lot of romance and heat, but we know that there’s chemistry of course.  It’s not until the end when the game is changed for them, that we see that there’s going to be much more to the story.

While it’s sweet – there were bits of the writing style that i’m not necessarily feeling – and that’s interesting because I’ve read other stories by this author and i don’t recall having that same impression.  Personally, it seems more in the editing than the writing, so i’m not going to keep it from letting me read the next installment in the series.  I wonder how this is going to play out knowing again that this series is ‘the British Stepbrother’ – so it’s onto the next to see what that means for this budding couple.

Review: Steel Scars (Red Queen #0.2) by Victoria Aveyard

Title: Steel Scars
Author: Victoria Aveyard
Publisher/Year:  Harper Collins 1/5/16
Length:   65 pages
Series:  Red Queen #0.2

In this digital prequel novella set in the Red Queen world, Captain Farley exchanges coded transmissions with the resistance as she travels the land recruiting black market traders, smugglers, and extremists for her first attempt at an attack on the capital. She was raised to be strong, but planting the seeds of rebellion in Norta is a tougher job than expected—until she stumbles upon a connection that may prove to be the key to the entire operation: Mare Barrow.

My Thoughts

I really enjoy this series and getting to see bits and pieces into what made our characters into what they rae is great.  We get to see a bit more about Farley’s rise to power and then when she came in contact with Mare. (and Shade).

Throughout the 2nd book in the series, we see a budding romance between Farley and Shade and now we get to see how they met and what was potentially there at the very beginning of things.  I think that it humanizes Farley a bit – and i think that it’s a side of her that we need.

On top of that, we get a bit more intel on the relationship that she has with her father and what happened to make it so tense throughout that second book.  We know that there’s a unique thing there and its no surprise to watch the progression.

The other nice thing that we see here is that we see that Shade knew of his ‘powers’ for a bit but didn’t know that anyone else was like him and then they see the Queenstrial and alas – end scene.

I love these novellas though – where we have a little snippet to hold us over until something else comes along.  and on that note  – have a great night all!

Review: Make Me Remember (Make Me #7) by Beth Kery

Title: Make Me Remember
Author: Beth Kery
Publisher/Year:  Penguin Publishing 5/16/16
Length:   78 pages
Series:  Make Me #7

During sun-drenched, passionate days spent on Jacob’s yacht, Harper and Jacob fall deeper in love, taking risks not only with their bodies but their hearts. The only thing standing between Jacob and pure bliss is the suspicion that Harper’s memories are returning. If they do, she may never see him the same way again—or let him keep her safe from the horror that she faced as a young girl…

The sense of security and trust Harper feels with Jacob has her finally abandoning herself to sensual decadence along with the truth that she’s hopelessly in love with this dark, daring man. With her submission to her feelings, sad memories and dreams begin to rise to the surface of her consciousness-and hers isn’t the only past being unburied. When one of her reporters reveals a startling revelation about Jacob’s history, their shared experiences crash together in a way that will change her forever.

My Thoughts

As i said in book #6, i think that we were starting to make progress in seeing if Harper would ever remember who Jacob was, and in this next book, its definitely something that’ll come to a head in this one.  In addition to seeing how Jacob and Harper are evolving their relationship, especially now that Harper has a better understanding of ‘why’ Jacob wants to have her around more.

So true to Beth Kery fashion, we have some intense sceneing between these two – their chemistry continues to be super heated and passionate and i love it.  i always want to see where Jacob takes her and what it means for the control that Harper has to give up.  It’s also intense to see how these interactions start to bring back her memories of the past – bit by bit.

The other nice thing that we’re FINALLY getting to is that folks are digging into Jacob’s past and i wonder who’s going to be the one to find out the truth first, Harper or the ppl at her paper, and what that will mean for her and Jacob since there’s a reason that he’s tried to reinvent himself.

So – i gather that book 8 is the conclusion so next week we’ll finally find out what’s going on.  Can’t wait!  Have a great day all!

Review: Dominated (The Enforcers #2) by Maya Banks

Title: Dominated
Author: Maya Banks
Publisher/Year:  Penguin Publishing Group 5/3/16
Length:   352 pages
Series:  The Enforcers #2

The desire that exploded in Mastered continues its conflagration in Dominated—from the New York Times bestselling author of the Surrender Trilogy.

To save her, he had to betray her…

In Drake’s shadowy world, his enemies would exploit any weakness he had in order to bring him to his knees, and so he’s never allowed himself to care about anyone…never exhibited any vulnerability, and it made him a force to be reckoned with. Until Evangeline—his angel. A woman who slipped past his defenses like no one had ever managed. She was his to protect and ultimately, to do that, he had to do the unthinkable and drive the only good thing in his world away.

But he will stop at nothing to get her back…

Devastated and destroyed, Evangeline doesn’t know what made Drake turn on her in such a shocking manner. She only knows she’ll never be the same. He once freed her from all her inhibitions, only now she is a prisoner to never-ending pain. But when Drake finds her again, she realizes there is more to his world than she ever imagined, and she must decide if she can once more trust—and submit—to the man who holds her wounded heart in his hands. And he must convince her of just how far he’ll go to regain her love and forgiveness.

My Thoughts

This is yet another example of how Ms Banks knows how to weave a story together so nicely that you’re not only drawn in by the characters both main and supporting but the story line just keeps it flowing at such a nice clip that you’re dying to keep reading even when it’s like 3am.

In this 2nd installment of the series, we see that Drake and Evangaline are at a crossroads of a sort – where Drake’s hand was forced in a sense for him to make his ‘enemies’ think that Evangaline was nothing more than a warm body to him in order to keep her from danger.  In doing that though, he pushed her so far away that she wanted nothing to do with him, even though without him she had nothing and felt like she was nothing.

This story takes us on the rollercoaster that is their relationship.  Drake has to not only find her, but convince her to believe that he didn’t truly mean anything that he said, and of course that is something that never comes easy in these stories.  Trust is a hard thing to come by as we’ve seen with both our mains, and it’s only through the help of Drake’s men who adore and love Evangaline themselves that we see progress being made.

If that weren’t enough, they are going to find themselves dealing with issues and challenges at every turn.  How much do they share with the public – how will he keep her safe, and what will that all mean for their relationship which is in a territory that neither are familiar wit hand are comfortable with.

If you think that’s enough to make a really good story – there’s yet that other element of something amazing that Ms Banks always gives us and that’s chemistry and heat that is sooo intense that you can’t help but root for them.  And if you think that the depth of relationship is enough between these two, you can’t forget all of the men that are in their circle – Silas and Maddox of course are favorites but the others (sans Hatcher of course) are definitely worth learning more about as they are not just sexy in their own ways but ultimately great guys. So…not sure who will be next featured in this series but i can’t wait to see what happens.

Review: The Billionaire’s Control by Crystal Kaswell

Title: The Billionaire’s Control
Author: Crystal Kaswell
Publisher/Year:  3/28/16
Length:   214  pages
Series:  The Billionaire’s Control

She needs this job. He needs her tied to his bed and screaming his name.

Lizzy Wilder is desperate to stay in New York City with her sister Kat, the one person she trusts. Lizzy’s only hope is a programming internship at hot tech startup Odyssey. But there’s a problem: the company’s CEO is enigmatic billionaire Nick Marlowe–the impossibly sexy one night stand she never expected to see again.

Nick stays in control of his life. He doesn’t f*** interns. Period. If Lizzy wants to work at Odyssey, she needs to keep things platonic.

She tries. Hard. But the connection they shared, the way he captivated her– there’s no way her body or her heart will allow her to forget him. There’s no way she can work under him without working underhim.

Can she risk the job she needs for the man she wants? And can she really handle being under his control if he wants her too?

My Thoughts

Thank you NetGalley for getting me a copy of this, and of course that also means thank you so that i got into the previous bit of this story with Kat and Blake.  Provided for a great set up and lead in for this story!

So in this semi 2nd installment in the series, we get to see more into the life and mind of Lizzy – Kat’s younger sister now that she’s in college and trying to make her way in the world.  We know that she chose to go to Stamford to study STEM and programming and where we are now is in the break between semesters where she’s trying to get an internship to learn more about AI and to also find a way to fund her education.

The nice thing about this second story is that we learn that there’s more to present day than we knew – as these two, Lizzy and Nick met previously and what they thought was a one night thing has brought up problems as their connection is amazing and they don’t know what to do about it in this situation with professional and personal.

What we spend a lot of time thinking about in this story is how to get past what terrifies us, and understanding what it is that will make us happy and be best for everyone.  With Lizzy, it’s getting over a lot of the pain that she’s had since the car accident that she was in that killed her parents and left her with a horrible injury.  She’s terrified of cars and that’s something that continues to come up here.

then there’s the fact that neither Lizzy nor Nick seem to be able to love, to be open to love and even have faith that it’s something that they’re worthy of, and i think that we clearly see this uphill battle and i can’t wait to see how it plays out.

What’s supposed to be a casual sexual relationship, or as casual as it can be when you have an alpha male who’s a dominant and into control and BDSM, but casual is where they try to let this play out.  Lizzy tries to improve upon her skills while also throwing caution to the wind in how she’s trying to seduce him.

Our author does a great job of keeping the story moving – of giving us what we want in terms of anxiety and tension, and then delivering on the need for chemistry, heat and passion – and just dirty scening.  That’s something that Ms Kaswell has done very nicely.

We have to assume that something’s going to happen between these two to cause of rift as it can never be smooth sailing all the time, and i think that it’s interesting to see what comes between them.  There are so many secrets being kept that it’s no wonder that more have to come towards the end to get us to the finale.  I feel like the characters that we begin to meet in the latter third of the story are going to be essential not just to the ending but to the next installment, and i can’t wait to see how THAT plays out.

On that note, have a great weekend all and i’ll be back!
