Overview

I thought Victoria and I could be together – until she told me her secret.

But coming to terms with her deception isn’t my only concern – my own secret has leaked to the press, and now the people of Montovia will see once and for all that I’m not the crown prince they thought I was.

And after everything Victoria and I have survived, am I about to lose everything I hold dear?

My Thoughts

So…..now we know why VIctoria can’t have babies and of course that means that there’s an issue of whether she can even be Andrews wife since she can’t produce an heir.  If that were their only problem right?

So we’re back in Montovia, likely not the best place for them to be together, but they are there.  And we see that it’s definitely getting harder and harder for them.  They want to be together and have admitted as much to each other but everyone around them really wants that not to happen.  Lady Clarissa walks in at the wrong moment and all hell breaks loose.  Leaving Victoria on the floor, Andrew storming off, the King pissed off yet again, and a betrothal announced.  or so we think.

Fast forward to running off to a train because Victoria needs out of the country fast, and we see that these two really can’t keep their hands off each other.  Chaos ensues and in addition to their own craziness, we learn that the secret that Andrews’ been hiding has come out – not just what we learned in book 4, but what the truth is and that means that they have to get back to Montovia ASAP to try to fix things

The question that we’re constantly asking ourselves is whether this is all worth it and if they can ever manage to find some time to just ‘be’.  Andrew throughout this story has started to evolve from what we saw at first to being a man only living for his country and duty as crown prince to a man that perhaps wants something for himself.  is he willing to do what it takes to have that though?  we don’t know yet and i’m assuming that we’ll find out in book 6 out in the next week.  Enjoy!

Overview

I’m faced with an impossible choice: Montovia deserves an heir who will do anything to serve his country, and Victoria deserves a man who will put her above all else. I can’t be both. It’s impossible.

But I also can’t give her up. I’ve never wanted anyone or anything like I want Victoria. And even though circumstances try to tear us apart, I can’t stay away—and impossible or not, I can’t put off my choice any longer.

My Thoughts

We knew that things were going to get tough for poor Andrew, and that Victoria was coming into her own realizations of what was for her and what wasn’t – but you also know that in a twisted romance like this – everyone’s going to get hurt.

So the Pageantry continues – and the farce of Andrew’s quest to find a bride becomes all lopsided since his secret is out with his father, and he’s being forced to marry Princes Justine to keep his country from becoming a laughing stock, however Lady Clarissa, his cousin seems to have this arrangement with Andrew’s father and her claws are deeply into everything.

Add the growing feelings that Victoria and Andrew have for each other, and the point that they’ve now acknowledged that they ‘care’ for one another, and you know that it’s going to be explosive.

In this 4th installment, we see things really heat up in the romance and naughtiness departments between these two.  There’s still electricity between them and i’m starting to see that our author(s) has a bit of a sexy side since the scenes that we do get are spicy.

The main point though of this fourth book though i think is that we see that these two have so much heat that they push each other away, and we see Victoria leave the palace not just once but twice because this life isn’t for her.  Because of all that too – we finally get to hear about her story – her past and what made her life into what it is.

There are things being asked of both of our main characters that’s really too much for either to cope with and i think that we’re going to see that not only will the King continue to be up in arms, but it’ll be a true test of whether their emotions and feelings are enough to make things work.  I don’t know what the story will bring since there are so many people against it all, but i think that it’ll be entertaining.  On that note – i’m off to book 5.  have a great night!

Overview

Falling for a prince is no fairy tale – especially when the prince in question is holding a pageant to find a wife.

I know it’s Prince Andrew’s job to marry someone from the nobility—and my job to turn his search into a juicy tabloid story—but the longer I do this, the harder it is to deny my feelings. And he has the audacity to continue this ridiculous spectacle of a marriage pageant while doing things to me in private that make my toes curl…

The more time I spend in the Montovian Palace, though, the more I start to see the other side of Prince Andrew – the side he hides beneath his brooding exterior and his unwavering devotion to his country. Finally, after everything we’ve been through, I’m starting to learn his secrets…

My Thoughts

The saga continues – and it’s getting complicated for everyone involved.  The Pageant of finding Andrew a wife is now in full force, even after the king has walked in to discover Andrew and Victoria in bed.  The woman that he’s brought in to be Andrew’s wife though, that’s another issue completely.

Suffice it to say, there’s no shortage of excitement in this third installment.  Aside from the secret that Andrew’s trying to keep from coming out, (which we only start to get to the bottom of), we have the growing attraction and inability for Victoria and Andrew to keep their hands off each other, and then add on the ‘wife candidates’ and then William (Andrew’s brother) – well you know that things will get to be good.

The change in this installment from what we saw in the previous ones are that there’s depth that’s  beginning to show.  We know that Victoria’s not clueless to what her role in all this is, but we see that it’s becoming more difficult for her to both do her job and continue down the path of whatever it is between her and Andrew.  They are both going to get hurt through all this, and Victoria seems to be trying to distance herself from it all.

Then there’s the fact that Andrew is so ‘by the rules’ that things are not just complicated but thoroughly entertaining.  He’s as stickler for all the rules of being a royal and having manners, yet clearly he’s not a man of complete manners when it comes to Victoria because he’s quite the ‘naughty prince’ when they are alone.

Now there’s adding in William – someone who’s likely a better match for Victoria on paper, and one that the Queen supports as well – but jealousy is something that we see come out in huge strength when he’s in the room.

So all in all, there’s a lot of excitement that comes out and i feel like there’s something big around the corner.  The secret that Andrew has been trying to keep under wraps has come out but in a different form, and another princess has come along in the search for a wife.  Personalities clash, emotions come to the surface and i don’t know that everyone will be happy in the end.  Can’t wait to see what’s next.

Overview

As the crown prince, I’ve devoted my life to Montovia. My one mistake has already cost me dearly, and I find I must now take more drastic measures to regain the trust of the people.

Victoria can help me to do just that. And though she finds my plan ridiculous, it is the only way to regain what I’ve lost.

But she continues to surprise me. And after our ordeal, I find I’m unable to find comfort anywhere but in her arms.

I can’t stay away from her, but I know that because of my position, she and I can never be together.

My Thoughts

Well, we now know that they have survived the plane crash and have found civilization and as you’ll recall, the very last scene in book 1 was that they saw the news that reported that Prince Andrew had commit suicide by crashing his plane.  So now they are dealing with that and the need to get back to Montovia in order to both squash this story as well as preemptively deal with the nonsense that caused the need for Victoria to come into play in the first place.

We find ourselves in the hospital because Victoria needed treatment for the cut on her foot.  Along with this, we see that there’s a bond growing between these 2 – we know that they have romantic feelings towards one another but refuse to act upon it since it’s just never going to work out.  Then there’s the bit of the crazy plan that Andrew has on staging a reality bit of sorts to find a wife and to get married – all to put himself back in the good graces of people, to stave off the fallout from the secret that he’s keeping and to make sure that his brother Leopold doesn’t take over his spot as the loved one.

So the novella that we have here is a bit of a jumpy one.  We end up back in Montovia, and we see how the beginnings of this crazy plan are falling into place. There’s definitely a few fishy things going on since his father the king was all to quick to agree to the idea of the farce, and then he has his own idea of who Andrew should marry.  Between you and me (and likely all of the readers) – yo uhave to know that it’s the girl that caused all the problems to begin with….right?

Aside from that, there’s the fact that there’s a clear attraction between Victoria and Andrew, everyone sees it but they aren’t really willing to admit it to themselves nor can they truly act on it.  So they continue under the guise that they can’t sleep without one another to make themselves feel better about their need to spend time together.

Being that it’s a short 2nd installment, we don’t get too much out of it.  We learn a bit more about Victoria, although the more we learn, the more we see that there are secrets in her past that we don’t yet know.  i’m kind of hoping that we will since she keeps dropping hints about reasons that she wasn’t able to do things in her past.  i’m intrigued.

Then there’s the fact of the bigger secret that we still don’t know but can guess about.  i’m curious how that’s all going to play out.

And then there’s the last scene in this book where the king barges in and sees something that he doesn’t want to.  so…where will we go from here?  it’s onto book 3 to find out.  Enjoy!

Overview

Some princes are charming. Others are assholes.

I’ve spent most of my career writing tabloid articles about the royals of Montovia, and Prince Andrew, the heir to the throne, was always the one that intrigued me most. He’s so guarded, so mysterious…so ridiculously attractive.

And then I met him. And I found out he’s the most arrogant, smug, infuriating man to ever live.

He also desperately needs my help.

There are three things I know for sure. First, Prince Andrew has a secret. Second, he’ll do anything to keep it a secret. And third, in spite of how infuriating I find him, I can’t help being incredibly attracted to him.

My Thoughts

I desperately needed something light to read for a minute while i was both traveling and getting through Throne of Glass since that’s a really ‘deep’ series.  So…i stumbled across this series – the first novella in the Royal Mistake Series. To be honest, it was exactly what i needed in the sense of being light and airy – but ….it’s a story that likely needs to be developed more as it probable will be in the coming installments.

So in this first book, as the summary tells you, we come across our leading lady who is a tabloid reporter who’s assigned to the royal family of Montrovia – a country that i’m guessing us supposed to be a version of Great Britain.  Anyhow…we start the story where she is the guest of one of her close friends Elle who is engaged to a Royal, however since Prince Andrew, the heir knows that she’s a reporter and doesn’t allow them at state dinners, he has her deported.  That’s where things turn for her i suppose.

So she finds herself back in the US at work, hoping to pitch another type of story where she doesn’t have to follow the royals around (a task she’s found herself in given that the Queen trusts her because of a story she helped spin a while back), and her boss isn’t having it.  She tries to resign, only to find the Prince in his office, looking for her help.

Then there’s Prince Andrew, the heir to the throne and the one that’s got a huge reputation to live up to.  Apparently there was a night in Prague a while back that he did something that he isn’t proud of and that can ruin his reputation along with that of his country – so he’s in a bind to try to spin the story before it comes out.

That’s where our character’s paths cross once again.  He needs her, she wants nothing to do with him.  Add in a plane crash and a quest for survival, along with an attraction that they don’t want to act on and we have the beginnings of a story.

The challenge that i have here, which i should get over since it’s a novella is that it’s light.  There’s not a ton of depth to it, but again, that’s kind of what i wanted to i don’t think that it makes ALL that much of a difference.  Then there’s the little twist of what they find out as news coming out of Montrovia of the plane crash – and that’s where our first installment ends.

So, all in all, exactly what i needed and while it was light, i’ll give the rest of the series a try since i think that i need something that doesn’t require a lot of my brain power to process.  Have a great day all!

Overview

Celaena Sardothien is the assassin with everything: a place to call her own, the love of handsome Sam, and, best of all, freedom. Yet, she won’t be truly free until she is far away from her old master, Arobynn Hamel; Celaena must take one last daring assignment that will liberate her forever. But having it all, means you have a lot to lose . . .

My Thoughts

I’ve been waiting for this finale of the novella prequels – just so that we could what led up to Celaena’s capture -and it’s as emotional and heartfelt as i think we were all expecting.  We knew that she had taken a contract to kill one of the biggest crime lords in Rifthold and that it had gone sour, resulting in Sam’s death – but we didn’t quite get to see what led up to that contract.

We know that Sam and Celaena made the decision that they couldn’t be part of Arobynn’s keep and that they needed to free themselves and start a life of their own.  It comes at a cost and it’s not just monetary sadly that we learn this .

They pay off Arobynn to get out of the Assassin’s Guild and find out that while they want to leave the city, it’s going to cost them everything and they need to make sure that they have enough to survive on alone. That’s where trouble starts since Sam comes across a contract to kill people that are untouchable and you know that it can’t end well.

The journey on this final book is seeing if their love is enough to take such risks, and then seeing that perhaps there’s more to Arobynn than we saw before, although it was alluded to plenty in how Celaena calls him ‘father, brother, lover’ – but without action on the lover part.  There are comments that Arobynn makes that you really wonder what the motivation is there.

There’s a lot of build up to the actual attempt on Farran’s life and Jayne’s life and then we see how things go drastically wrong.  I think that in my mind, Celaena was successful with killing Farran, and yet the way that we read this installment, the story is different.  Nonetheless, i’m still so incredibly sad at how we read their demise, and seeing what Celaena has ahead of her in Endovier….well it’s heartbreaking yet you have some hope.

I really admire our author in the telling of this whole story.  I feel like there’s so much depth and intrigue throughout each installment, and the fact that i read this series of prequels at the point that i did allowed me to paint a picture in my head of things and then watch how they played out in the timeline of the story.  All in all, amazing.  Now i’m ready to get into book 5, although it means that i’ll have to wait ages for book 6.  but i’ll do it.  Enjoy!

Review: The Assassin and the Underworld (Throne of Glass #0.4) by Sarah J Maas

Title: The Assassin and the Underworld
Author: Sarah J Maas
Publisher/Year: Bloomsbury USA 1.3.12
Length:   40 Pages
Series:  Throne of Glass #0.4

Overview

When the King of the Assassins gives Celaena Sardothien a special assignment that will help fight slavery in the kingdom, she jumps at the chance to strike a blow against an evil practice. The misson is a dark and deadly affair which takes Celaena from the rooftops of the city to the bottom of the sewer–and she doesn’t like what she finds there.
My Thoughts
I LOVE this prequel series – it’s the greatest.  We are finally at the turning point of everything that’s come to be part of what makes Celaena who she is, and i think that we’ve all been waiting soo anxiously – the whole story about Sam and what made her turn so quickly on Arobynn.
The sam thing has thrown me the entire time we’ve been reading the Assassin’s Blade since it’s been rather clear that they don’t care for each other at all.  And since their relationship was such a big thing throughout the main series, I was just waiting for the moment when the curtain was lifted to see how they really came together.
This installment takes us to the point in time when we see Celaena is back from the Red Desert, she’s been betrayed by the one person she considered a friend, and she has a plan how to get away from Arobynn forever.  it’s still quite a bit from the point where she throws down the gauntlet.
So we’re back at the keep, and she’s kept the gold that she was gifted a secret so that she can buy her freedom.  Arobynn is acting a bit off when she comes back – although he continues to bestow lavish gifts on her in the hopes that she’s able to forgive him.  She then gives her a mission that pulls at her heart strings which personally i felt was a bit off, but she bought into it.
It’s this mission that brings her to the dark side of things since there’s so much more at stake than she knew.
Then there’s the bit of Sam.  It’s been 3 months since she had seen him, and well, a lot has transpired since then.  We see that he’s become quite friendly with Lysandra who we all know Celaena doesn’t have warm fuzzies to at this point in the story – and so we see jealousy and hatred come out at full force.  Clearly Sam doesn’t feel about Lysandra the way that Celaena thinks is at play, and we start to see that there’s more to the relationship between Celaena and Sam even if they won’t admit it.
So like i said, a lot comes into focus in this 4th prequel and i think that we’re finally connecting all those dots that brought us to the main series and into what we have seen Celaena transform into.  Knowing that there’s just one more, we know where it’s going to end and i’m a bit apprehensive about reading it because i don’t want to see how things turn…but i guess it’ll get me up to speed on the pre-story and then i can get back into book 5.
Have a great day all!

Review: The Assassin and the Desert (Throne of Glass #0.3) by Sarah J Maas

Title: The Assassin and the Desert
Author: Sarah J Maas
Publisher/Year: Bloomsbury USA 1.3.12
Length:   40 Pages
Series:  Throne of Glass #0.3

Overview

The Silent Assassins of the Red Desert aren’t much for conversation, and Celaena Sardothien wouldn’t have it any other way. She’s not there to chatter, she’s there to hone her craft as the world’s most feared killer for hire. When the quiet is shattered by forces who want to destroy the Silent Assassins, Celaena must find a way to stop them, or she’ll be lucky to leave the desert alive.
My Thoughts
Again, has to be said – i LOVE these prequels.  i think that every time we get another story in the life of Celaena before we came upon her on Throne of Glass, we get to see a bit more into her soul.  and that’s something that truly impresses me.
In this third story – we get to see what her life was like for that month when she was sent to the Red Desert to atone for what she did in betraying Arobynn’s deal with the slaves – so that she could get trained by the Silent Assassin Master.  What she got instead was quite the life lesson.
Celaena finds that there’s so much more to being trained than just showing up.  She has to get to the point where the master chooses to train her and for some, that day never comes.  It’s only through a friendship with Ansel, another beautiful girl who lives in the fortress that she’s able to live – and train a bit while she waits.  It’s through a trip into town on an assignment that things change for Celaena, she’s convinced to steal the Aseterion horse – a masterpiece of a stallion.  We’ve heard the hints of the story throughout the main series but to see what happened to make it come to life is even better.  To learn that it wasn’t her plan to do it – that means so much more since we know that she’s quite ruthless.
It’s how she handles herself when she returns to the fortress that somehow makes the Master decide to train her and from there on out we see how she’s taught the mannerisms and skills of that tribe.
It’s only when there’s a spy amidst them – when we see someone that we trust turn against them all, Celaena is poisoned, the master is as well and so many lose their lives.  What comes of it though is such a sweet ending to it all, and i think that we have seen how that’s woven into what makes our leading lady into who she is.
Honestly, i don’t know where Ms Maas comes up with this stuff, but it’s amazing!

Review: The Assassin and the Healer (Throne of Glass #0.2) by Sarah J Maas

Title: The Assassin and the Healer
Author: Sarah J Maas
Publisher/Year: Bloomsbury USA 1.3.12
Length:   38 Pages
Series:  Throne of Glass #0.2

Overview

Meet the Assassin: beautiful, defiant, destined for greatness. Celaena Sardothien has challenged her master. Now she must pay the price. Her journey to the Red Desert will be an arduous one, but it may change the fate of her cursed world forever…
My Thoughts
Another prequel to the story so that we can see what Aelin went thorugh before we started Throne of Glass with her.  As you’ll remember if you read the first prequel, Celaena and Sam made the decision to go against Arobynn’s request and feed the slaves.  we knew that there would be punishment, and in addition to beatings that they both had, this is when Celaena was sent to the Red Desert to study under the Mute Master of Assassins.
Personally i think that it’s a necessary bit of the story to see how Celaena got to where she is, and then to see that while we all knew that she was human and was fighting demons of her own past, that there’s something real and hearty to grasp onto.
The other nice things about this novella is that if you have read up through book 4 already, you’ll remember that there’s a moment when they feel that there’s a big need for a skilled healer for one of our main characters and the only place to send them is to Antica – where there is an academy of skilled healers.  Makes you wonder if there’s one in particular that Celaena was thinking of or just hoping that their incredible skill all around could save their friend.
Anyway – i love these novellas and now it’s off to read the next one!

Review: The Assassin and the Pirate Lord (Throne of Glass #0.1) by Sarah J Maas

Title: The Assassin and the Pirate Lord
Author: Sarah J Maas
Publisher/Year: Bloomsbury USA 1.3.12
Length:   38 Pages
Series:  Throne of Glass #0.1

Overview

On a remote island in a tropical sea, Celaena Sardothien, feared assassin, has come for retribution. She’s been sent by the Assassin’s Guild to collect on a debt they are owed by the Lord of the Pirates. But when Celaena learns that the agreed payment is not in money, but in slaves, her mission suddenly changes – and she will risk everything to right the wrong she’s been sent to bring about.

My Thoughts

After reading quite a bit of the series, it’s really great to take a slight step back to see what Celaena was like when she was Adarlan’s Assassin – the most deadly out there.  What we have in this first prequel is the story of Celaena with Sam – in Skull Bay, where they’ve been sent on a recovery mission from Arobbyn, but where they learn that the task they were told about isn’t the task at all.

What i like about this though is that we see there’s an emotional side and a very human side to Celaena at this point in the story – it’s 8 years post the disappearance of magic, and we see that while she’s not thrilled with who’s in control of her life, she’s able to have a bond with some.

It’s also really interesting to see how things were between her and Sam, since we kept reading about him in the main installments, and here, they are clearly not in the same place – although you can see hints of what’s to come.

These novellas are really great, especially since the main books are soo long and really deep.  Sometimes it’s nice to have this snackable content – knowing that there’s something big coming up.

On that note – i’m going to dive into the next one shortly.  Enjoy!
