Overview

Deuce’s whole world has changed. Down below, she was considered an adult. Now, topside in a town called Salvation, she’s a brat in need of training in the eyes of the townsfolk. She doesn’t fit in with the other girls: Deuce only knows how to fight.

To make matters worse, her Hunter partner, Fade, keeps Deuce at a distance. Her feelings for Fade haven’t changed, but he seems not to want her around anymore. Confused and lonely, she starts looking for a way out.

Deuce signs up to serve in the summer patrols—those who make sure the planters can work the fields without danger. It should be routine, but things have been changing on the surface, just as they did below ground. The Freaks have grown smarter. They’re watching. Waiting. Planning. The monsters don’t intend to let Salvation survive, and it may take a girl like Deuce to turn back the tide

My Thoughts

I really enjoy this series and can’t put my finger on what makes it so different.  In this story, we’ve got our classing YA love triangle, but i’m not sure who i’m rooting for.  This 2nd installment takes us on a few different paths, and the outcome is still kind of ambiguous to me (probably the reason that i’m loving it).  So as the overview above states, Deuce finds herself in a place that she’s just not made for (or so she thinks).  In the enclave, she was an adult, never had to answer to parents or teachers other than Silk and the Wordkeepers and that’s absolutely not how it is in Salvation.  She’s also at a crossroads since Fade wants nothing to do with her and Stalker does, and Tegan’s an entirely different story since she keeps trying to make it seem as though everything that happened on the journey never happened.

This means that there HAS to be trouble brewing outside their little world since they are so involved in this story line right?  Well, that’s exactly what we get.  While we’re led to believe that the Freaks (or Muties) are primitive and without the ability to plan and develop strategy and think on their own, we learn that evolution is taking place and things are going to be flipped faster than we know it.

Some of the secondary characters in also begin to be more important here which is nice.  Longshot not only has a soft side for Deuce, but he really believes in her.  Through this book we learn a bit more and see where their relationship will take them.  we also see more from Momma Oakes and Edmund which is nice since Deuce needs someone to be a parent and these 2 are PERFECT for the job.

So, there’s a lot of ups and downs in this story, and the lead into the 3rd book Horde is really putting me on edge.  i can’t wait to see what comes next and here’s what i hope we find out

1) What is Longshot asking Deuce to do and what will come of that?

2) What’s going on with Fade?  (really?!?)

3) What’s happening outside the walls of Salvation and how long will those walls hold up?

4) what is it that the Freaks really want?

5) who will survive?

happy reading all!!

Review: Endurance (Razorland Series #1.5) by Ann Aguirre

Title:  Endurance
Author: Ann Aguirre
Publisher/Year: Square Fish 2012
Length:  32 pages
Series: Razorland Series #1.5

Overview

When rebellion destroys the underground world in which Thimble and Stone have grown up, they take Stone’s son and try to escape the chaos. Along the way, they must evade the Freaks, beings who feed on human flesh. Leaving behind the roles of Builder and Breeder which they were assigned at birth, they wander the underground tunnels, looking for safety yet afraid to go “topside” where legend has it that the light and water will burn their skin from their bones.

Their journey takes them upward to an unimagined world of tinned food, comfortable furniture, and books. Away from their regimented society for the first time, and still facing imminent danger, Thimble and Stone acknowledge the forbidden attraction which both have denied for years.

My Thoughts

This is what i LOVE about .5 books (or novellas as we like to call them too).  they give us a great continuation of the story from someone else’s POV which we hope will come into play in the following installments of the series.  in this case, i’m fairly certain that these 2 characters will play a good role in the next book and i hope that we get to see where things go with them.

so as you remember from reading Enclave – book 1 in the series, Thimble and Stone are Deuce’s best friends.  They have their own paths in life with Thimble being a Builder since we learned that she was born with a slight disability – one leg is shorter than the other and i think that she may have a club foot.  it’s not a major issue compared to what it could be however given the circumstances that society lives in now, they typically leave the deformed out to be eaten by the Freaks.  Thimble we learn through the course of Endurance though is INCREDIBLY smart and will be quite valuable down the line

Stone we learned in book 1 is quite handsome and has been put into the Breeder caste – charged with maintaining the population of the enclave.  They choose the strongest, best looking of the brats to become Breeders in the hopes to keep a strong population coming along.  We heard that he had ‘sired’ one boy and that boy comes on the jounrey with Thimble and Stone.

So back to the story.  When Duece and Fade were cast out of the enclave, there were rumblings that there was imbalance and that people weren’t willing to just abide by what the elders told them to do.  We also heard that Nassau another enclave close by had been taken by the freaks and all this was BAD news.  so in Endurance, we’re finding ourselves in the midst of a power struggle where only the best can survive.  while Stone and Thimble manage to do that, they decide that they have better odds to go out on their own and see what safety and life they can make for themselves and Boy23 (Stone’s son).

This is a great few chapters where we get to see friendship grow and family bonds become tighter.  i really can’t wait to see what happens in the next installment since there’s so much that can be done with this.

so per usual – here are my questions:

1) what’s going to happen between Thimble and Stone

2) will they find helpful information in the computer that they’ve found?

3) will they make it topside and once they are there what will happen?

4) what role will Boy23 play?
