Joseph Ingram made the mistake of stealing from me-four million dollars. He took my intelligence without paying for it. And thought he could get away with it.
Now I’ll take something from him-something irreplaceable.
But even when Joseph doubles the amount of money he owes me, I don’t give her up.
Nope. I have an image to maintain.
So I keep her.
And I’m not giving her up.
I really do enjoy the worlds that our author Penelope Sky creates for us. They’re intertwined at times, but still quite unique and really dark, seedy and hot. What a great combination right?
In this story we have Crewe, our leading man, a powerful man – who runs a scotch empire sure, but who trades intelligence for a price. As all powerful semi illegal men are in these stories, if you cross him, then you pay with your life or that of someone close to you. Joseph should have known that trying to pay with counterfeit money wouldn’t go over well, and now London, his sister pays the price for it.
Crewe we learn throughout this story is a man with a dark dark past – it takes most of the story to get to the crux of it, but essentially, he feels that his revenge is worth being so hard. He’s got an army of men who protect him, and woman who is his partner, and that term is strictly business. Ariel. She’s tough on the outside and clearly harbors no love lost or even emotion towards Crewe for reasons that we don’t yet know. But we come to really dislike her because she hates London on site. (mind you, she really hates that London is american but there has to be more to it than that)
London is the slave here – the one taken captive and she’s got her whole life ahead of her. She’s studying at NYU to become a doctor and loves her work. She’s kidnapped from all that she knows, knowing that she’ll never get to go back. Never get to see her friends again, and hopefully though figure out how to escape to get to her brother.
We go on a roller coaster with these two throughout this first installment. We spend much of our time hoping that London’s strong will and personality will help her figure out how to get free from Crewe. We also spend much of the book hoping that Crewe has a bit of humanity left in him to make London as comfortable as possible.
There are moments when they admit attraction to one another, and moments when crewe does horrible things like try to sell her off to the most disgusting horrible man in the world. It’s a story full of whiplash and fear, but also one of attraction and chemistry.
We spend a lot of time wondering if London will ever be free, if her brother will manage to stay alive (because i forgot to mention that Crewe is really dispicable here with what he’s done), if Crewe is human and what the true back story is to get us to where we are. A point of hope and hopelessness. Attraction and hate. And where we are left off, we see that the future is as bleak as ever.
True to form in the other series that i’ve read by Ms Sky, the scenes when they happen are HOT. The chemistry is amazing, the way that everything’s told makes you feel like your’e right in the moment with themand you need the same release just as they do. I need more and i’m happy to say that i’m cruising right into book 2! enjoy!
